Turning Springfield into a Major Transportation Hub

The projects, especially when considered together, have the potential to revitalize the Pioneer Valley Region by establishing a convenient and efficient transportation backbone that benefits commuters and employers, stimulates tremendous economic development, and improves our environment.
 

 

New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Commuter Rail Line

This line will offer a more convenient, greener option for North-South travel between Springfield and New Haven, CT, through a number of towns and cities, including Hartford. It will also give residents of Western Mass more convenient access to New York City through existing connections in New Haven. 
 
 

Knowledge Corridor Passenger Rail Study

The study scope includes evaluating the feasibility of:
  • Relocating the Amtrak Vermonter to the Connecticut River line route
  • Establishing a commuter rail service beginning north of Springfield
  • Increasing intercity passenger rail service along the entire corridor from New Haven, CT to White River Junction, VT

Springfield Union Station Redevelopment Plan

The plan aims include:
  • Creating a 21st Century transit facility that enhances regional mobility
  • Improving access and connectivity to public transportation, including: Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA), local and regional bus service; Intercity buses, Peter Pan and GreyhoundAmtrak, national passenger train service; commuter rail, planned for future.
  • Spur local area economic development over the longer-term
