Knowledge Corridor Passenger Rail Line: Building Momentum

In mid-2008, the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission (PVPC) began the 1-91 Knowledge Corridor Passenger Rail Study to examine reestablishing passenger rail service on the Connecticut River Line between Springfield, MA and White River Junction, VT. One part of the study will evaluate commuter rail options and integrate planning with ConnDOT's New Haven-Hartford-Springfield (NHHS) Commuter Rail Line project.

In March 2009, the Pioneer Valley Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) voted to apply for federal stimulus money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fund the track rehabilitation required for the project. The U.S. Department of Transportation is expected to tell states how to apply for these grants by June 2009 and applications will be due in August.
